Arts at Newman

- BY CN ARTS COUNCIL

A lot has happened in the Arts Department in the past several weeks. Our annual Acoustic night was held on February 22nd. In honour of Black History month, our show featured a student led Afro-Caribbean Dance group which closed the show in style. Hot Chocolate, flavoured water and sweet treats were served to make the setting a comfortable café style ambiance. A great success to start off the New Year. We also had our first Open Mic Night in late February where students came together to support each other’s performances in a smaller, more intimate setting in the music room. The next Open Mic is scheduled for April 13th.

The CN Glee Club Performed at the Board-wide Vocal Festival on March 23rd. Their performance was an inspirational one, as they dedicated one of their songs – Hear You Me – to one of their classmates who had died just a month before. They ended off their set list with one of the Glee Club’s signature original student arranged Mashups. Live accompaniment was provided by the stage band for the overall flawless performance. The CN Glee Club will be performing at the Spring Showcase in May. The Stations of the Cross was presented to the School for Holy Week by the grade 9 Drama Class led by Mrs. Campbell. A Beautiful presentation done in silhouette setting put the sacredness of the week into perspective.

Ending off the month of March, the CN Dance teams set out to compete in Hamilton’s Best Dance Crew competition at Glendale High School. All seven Dance teams and the elementary dance team competed. Cardinal Newman’s visual art program has once again collaborated with the “Art in the Workplace” Exhibit at McMaster Innovation Park. The exhibit features the technical and creative accomplishments of CN artists through artwork which ranges in medium, style and subject matter. The exhibit is open to the public every Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 6:00pm and will be available for viewing until the end of June. The Grand Opening of “Art in the Workplace” exhibit will take place Thursday March 29th, 2018 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Join us to celebrate the talent and creative expression of Cardinal Newman’s young artists.

Beginning in April, our Drama students will participate in the Board-wide Improvaganza. The Film and Media Art classes will be going to see the Black Panther Movie on April 13th. The Dance Teams will once again compete in the Bedazzled competition at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre on April 19th. Musical Theatre will also be presenting “A Night on Broadway” at the end of the month.

There is a lot in store for the Arts Department in the coming months. Come out and see what we are all about. You won’t regret it!
