Build an arena with LRT dollars

-

RE: LRT

After the provincial June election with the expected Conservative win, the city will have an opportunity to kill several birds with one stone.

Conservative Leader Doug Ford has promised that if he is elected as premier, he will turn over the $1.2 billion allocated toward LRT to Hamilton council to spend any way it sees fit, with no prejudices.

Instead of an expensive LRT with many negative aspects, the city should take $500 million and put it toward a least disruptive and more reasonable and flexible BRT, leaving approximately $700 million left to spend on infrastructure such as sewers, roads, creating serviceable industrial parks, waterfront development, etc.

In addition, money would still be available to build a 10,000-seat arena on the Stoney Creek Mountain by the Link/Red Hill junction, where the Tim Hortons Field should have been built, as it is the only viable location due to serviceable land still being available, ease of access by vehicles, three HSR bus routes, and where many restaurants and fast food vendors are located.

Come on, Mr. Mayor and city council. Let’s use this LRT money in a more efficient manner, where it is needed and where we can get a bigger bang for our dollar. This investment would see us well into the next century. That would be quite a legacy for all! All that is needed is a will. Al Romaker, Stoney Creek
