Fourth edition of Max’s Big Ride set to wheel out of Hamilton

-

When Max Sedmihradsky leaves Hamilton on Monday for the Big Ride, it will be the fourth time the young boy has made the 600 km trek to Ottawa by cargobike.

Sedmihradsky, 7, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy — a fatal disease with no cure that does not allow his muscles to develop.

It affects roughly one in 5,000 males at birth. Most who have it are unlikely to live past 30.

Since 2015, Max’s Big Ride has not only raised awareness about his disease, it also raised more than $140,000.

It’s helped fund Duchenne research including the establishment of Max’s Big Fellowship with the Gunning Lab at the University of Toronto Mississauga.

Since then, they’ve expanded fundraising and awareness efforts and are now holding three summer events — Max’s Big Ride, The Ice Cream Ride (Saturday, June 23) and Max’s Big Climb (Saturday, July 21).

Sedmihradsky is taking his dad, Andrew, and two-year-old sister Isla on this bike trip to Ottawa.

It ends on Parliament Hill on Father’s Day, this coming Sunday. When they are done, Max and Andrew will have ridden over 2,400 km over the past four years — about the distance from Toronto to Miami.
