Semi final 55-plus Led by Rod Currie with four hits (including a double) and four RBIs, the fourth-place Tigers upset the first-place A’s 16-7 in a sudden-death semifinal. Al Purins Darrell Smith and John Fuciarelli each smacked three hits for the winners, with Purins scoring four runs, Smith three and Fuciarelli driving in a pair. Smith also banged out a long triple. Frank Simioni had two hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs, while Bill Ste. Marie and Steve Thorkildsen each had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Keith Howard led the A’s attack with three hits while Paul Smelser had two hits and two RBIs and Robin Pozzo smacked a triple and drove in two runs and scored a pair. Mike Parisi and Rob Whitehead each scored twice while Clyde Goldsmith had two RBIs. In the second semifinal, the third-place Cardinals beat the 2nd-place Dodgers 10-9 in10 innings, with Ian Robertson, Stephen McClure and Brian Avery (including a double) each smacking three hits. Avery scored three runs — including the 10th-inning winner on an infield single by Robertson. McClure and Robertson finished with two RBI each. Chris Fraser, the winning pitcher in relief, had two hits, including a double, while Wayne Powell scored two runs. Harvey Sahker paced the Dodgers’ attack with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while McEachern and Allan Agnew each had two hits and Phil Beaudoin went one for one with an RBI. Doug Schatz of Hamilton averaged 204 for 27 games at the Pabcom Seniors Tournament in Calgary and won a silver medal in men’s team play with John Chapman, Ray Vernynck and former Hamilton resident Joe Ciach. They finished 66 pins behind a U.S. team and 33 pins ahead of Mexico. On Day 1 Schatz started slow with a 523 triple, but rebounded in a big way with 671 which included a 267 game. Day 2 produced triples of 579 and 613 followed by big Day 3 triples of 637 with a 279 game, and 695 with a 268 game. A final day 570 gave the Skyway Lanes employee his 204 average. Ciach averaged 220 for 31 games with a pair of 290 games and high triples of 757 and 756. Final 300 game total for last season is 21 with Mick Anderer, Ryan Dickenson, Len Garinger Jr., Rob May and Art Oliver Jr. rolling two each. With one perfect game were Aaron Bouchard, Travis Cauley, Josh Colwell, Matt Havens, Bill Hicks, Matt Lewis, Nick Murphy, Doug Schatz, Mike Smith, Ron Smith and Brian Ward. Matt Lewis set a Hamilton high average record with 237 surpassing his father Lionel and his 235. Tops for the women are Christine Johnston 205 average and 279 single and Aleta manning a 720 triple.
