It de­fies all good sense that the gov­ern­ment of On­tario in­tends to go to the ex­treme of sus­pend­ing parts of the Cana­dian Char­ter of Rights and Free­doms for some­thing as triv­ial as down­siz­ing one mu­nic­i­pal coun­cil.

And it is no small irony that, in af­firm­ing its con­sti­tu­tional right to over­see mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties, the Ford gov­ern­ment is ready to sus­pend parts of that same con­sti­tu­tion.

On­tario’s best hope is that clearer heads will pre­vail. Thomas Mul­li­gan, Grimsby
