1936 — Tony Lazzeri becomes the first New York Yankees player to hit a World Series grand slam.

1978 — The New York Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox, 5-4, at Fenway Park to clinch the American League East after being 14 1/2 games out of first place only two months earlier. 1980 — Larry Holmes retains the WBC heavyweigh­t title, defeating Muhammad Ali.

2009 — The Internatio­nal Olympic Committee in Copenhagen votes 66-32 for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over Madrid, Spain. Chicago, Ill., was eliminated on the first ballot, and Tokyo, Japan, was eliminated on the second ballot.
