Bread-loving rodent spurs grocery store apology
Loblaws is apologizing to customers of a Main Street No Frills after the wide circulation online of photo of a mouse in a bag of bread at the store.
The picture of the tail end of a mouse — visible through the plastic bag surrounding a loaf of D’Italiano bread in a shopping cart — was posted on the news aggregation and discussion site Reddit on Wednesday. It had attracted 180-plus comments as of the next day.
In a statement, Loblaws public relations director Karen Gumbs apologized to customers — but also assured them the city’s public health department checked out the No Frills location and has “no concerns.”
“The store has taken a number of steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again, including working closely with their thirdparty pest control team, and inspecting bakery items daily,” she said.
Gumbs said the grocery store and its bread supplier are working to “determine the source” of the rogue rodent.
It’s not clear from the photo —or her statement — whether the mouse arrived
with the bread or chewed its way into the bag in the store.
Either way, many Reddit wags tended to see humour in the bread bag invasion.
Several sarcastically linked the mouse to the infamous bread price-fixing scandal that embarrassed the company last year.
One poster playfully argued the photo says more about the “industrious mouse” than it does about the grocery store.
“Why don't we turn this into a positive and cheer on this heroic mouse,” added another.
