It is with sadness that the family of Renate Ruland announces her passing at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice on April 24, 2019 at the age of 84 years. Renate will be lovingly remembered by her sons Chris (Leslie Sorochan) and Wilf (Shirley Schellenbe­rg); her granddaugh­ters Tess, Evelyn and Sara Sorochan-Ruland, and Sylvie and Amelia Schellenbe­rg-Ruland; and her sister Dorothea Annuss and her family. She was predecease­d by her son Michael and by her husband Dr. Notfrid Ruland. Born in Königsberg, East Prussia, Germany, a refugee of the war with her mother, sister and grandmothe­r, settling in Niebüll. In 1957 she immigrated to Canada with her husband to Ancaster where she has lived for the last 62 years. A devoted mother, she loved children, nature, birds and flowers in particular. She was an artist who depicted nature and fairy-tale like imagery. She was happiest when she was with her extended family and close friends, especially at the beach or at the lake. She was a lover of stories and detail, with an incredible memory of past events of her family and ancestors. A memorial gathering to allow family and friends to visit informally will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home, Ancaster Chapel, 378 Wilson Street East. There will be a brief program featuring a few words of memory and reflection from the family at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Good Shepherd.
