Be adventurous with coloured cabinetry

-

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and when designed well can be the perfect family gathering place. A great way to save money on your kitchen renovation is by painting and refurbishing your pre-loved cabinets.

When it comes to paint, your cabinets are a blank canvas – so dare to be adventurous with colour. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour and design expert, shares three key components that will bring new life to your kitchen.

Choose colour

Create contrast in a pale kitchen by using a deeper colour on the cabinets. “A sophisticated blue like Hale Navy HC-154, paired together with reflective metallic accents and appliances, adds a contemporary yet classic feel to your kitchen,” says Grech.

“Benjamin Moore Advance paint and primer are optimal for cabinets and hightraffic areas like kitchens as its unique formula offers a durable, high-end finish and has the advantage of soap and water clean-up.”

Use the right technique

Painting cabinets can be a big job, especially if you have a lot of room to cover. Hiring a contractor will remove the hassle and get the job done in much less time. If you're interested in taking on this project yourself, Grech recommends starting with a thorough wash and sand. Removing the doors, hinges and handles will give you the flattest and easiest painting surface. Then ready your cabinets for paint with a premium primer for a smoother, high-quality look. Finsih with two coats of your fresh new colour and let dry for 24 hours.

Select complementary hardware

Complementary hardware such as handles, pulls and faucets bring an additional layer of contrast and texture to your kitchen. “With coloured cabinetry, opting for simple hardware in gold, bronze or silver adds the perfect finishing touch while enhancing the kitchen colours.” (NC)
