A dignified death denied

-

Re: Whose death is it, anyway (Sept 20)

I am angered by a society that does not allow a person a humane assisted death if and when they want it.

I watched my mother suffer pain and humiliation in her final years of suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. Just as I listened with envy about a friend’s mother, suffering from brain cancer, but who had the good fortune to have two doctors who were compassionate and morally committed to doing what she requested. It made me weep, yet smile.

If I should follow my mother’s fate, I will also be requesting a date and time long before my mind goes. I will not allow our inhumane laws to cruelly intervene as with this poor Hagersville man.

I will go to Switzerland where life and death wishes are respected. Canada obviously has a very long way to go and we need to keep voicing our anger over our final wishes being denied. Sheena Hudson, Hamilton
