Atwood to highlight 2020 gritLIT
Annual Hamilton writers/readers festival has scored a coup, attracting one of Canada’s greatest authors
In a great coup for the city and the festival, gritLIT 2020 is bringing internationally renowned novelist Margaret Atwood to Hamilton as the marquee name on this year’s lineup of authors and speakers.
Known as Hamilton’s Festival for Readers and Writers, gritLIT has brought scores of writers to the city over the past 15 years, and this year’s crop is among the most thrilling ever, say organizers.
In addition to Atwood, author of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Alias Grace” and “The Robber Bride,” the festival will welcome Mona Awad, Ted Barris, Gwen Benaway, David Bergen, Lynn Coady, Robyn Doolittle, Terry Fallis, Rebecca Fisseha, Jesse
Thistle and many more.
Taking place April 16 to 19, gritLIT will feature 35 authors over four days for 28 events and eight writing workshops.
All festival events — with the exception of Margaret Atwood at the Playhouse Cinema,177 Sherman Ave. N., on April 16 — will take place at the Homewood Suites by Hilton, 40 Bay St. S.

gritLIT is in its 16th year and, since its birth in 2004, has become established as Hamilton’s premier opportunity to “get up close and personal” with a great diversity of writers, both veteran and emerging, over the course of a four-day schedule of readings, themed events, workshops and more.
The festival’s mandate is one of accessibility for both authors and audiences, putting a focus on local authors and giving them and readers exposure to each other that they might not otherwise have. For information, go to gritlit.ca.
