Connaught Fish and Chips closes up shop

It’s lights out at Connaught Fish & Chips.

The iconic Hamilton eatery has helped feed Hamiltonians for an astounding 90 years.

It began in 1930, at the corner of King and Connaught (hence, the name). In 1980, it moved to its current location, at the corner of Main and Gage, where it remained until the end.

After a quarter century dipping pieces of haddock and other fish into the deep fryer, owner Michael Veenstra has decided to call it a day.

He had planned to close on Friday, March 13, but once word spread on social media and among his customers about the pending closing, the lineups grew as folks sought one final visit.

By Thursday, he had run out of food, a testament to their food, service and place within the city.
