The Hamilton Spectator

No support for local journalism here

-

I find it interesting how folks in Hamilton are being bombarded with ads from The Spectator and CHCH television to support “local” journalism. If you folks want us to support “local,” don’t you have to give us local content to consider?

How many “local” jobs have been axed by Torstar and Channel Zero in the last six years? A great many this reader/viewer would say with the CHCH/Channel Zero faux bankruptcy of 2015 and within the last year the closing of the printing plant on Frid Street. How does a “local” paper only have a two to three page sports section most of the week and a local television station’s 11 p.m. broadcast is just a 90 per cent rerun of the 6 p.m. broadcast? How does a major media company, Bell, axe around 200-plus jobs in the last week while sitting on billions of dollars that includes pandemic funds from the government? How many veteran journalists have been jettisoned under the guise of “efficiencies?” While I appreciate that how we consume news has changed, if you want my support, there has to be far more “local” content for this viewer/ reader to consider “supporting” you!

PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. — Fresh off his victory in Saudi Arabia, Dustin Johnson decided Tuesday to withdraw from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, leaving the tournament without a player from the top 10 in the world ranking. Johnson is a two-time winner at Pebble Beach. He typically plays with his de facto father-in-law, hockey great Wayne Gretzky.
