Brampton man dies in local motel stabbing

Victim managed to flee the Red Rose Motel, but collapsed on the sidewalk

- NICOLE O’REILLY

A 40-year-old Brampton man is dead after being stabbed during an altercation in a room at the Red Rose Motel Sunday morning.

The fatally injured victim managed to flee the motel, at 553 Queenston Rd., on foot and made it a couple of hundred metres east before collapsing on the sidewalk.

A witness saw the man in distress and called 911 around 9:46 a.m., said Det. Daryl Reid, of the major crime unit, case manager for the homicide investigation.

When police arrived the victim was on sidewalk in front of an apartment building at 575 Queenston Rd., near Nash Road. He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

At the scene Sunday, blood was smeared on a bus shelter and on the ground in front of the apartment building. Police placed multiple yellow evidence tags marking debris and blood on the sidewalk and leading to the motel room.

Concerned family members of the victim arrived at the scene Sunday afternoon to speak with police and were led back to the police station.

The family has asked for some more time to reach extended family members, Reid said. The victim’s identity was expected to be released Monday.

Reid said he wouldn’t comment on what the victim was doing at the motel, or whether police have recovered a weapon. Police didn’t yet have details on the motive or who exactly was involved.

What police do know is that the victim was visiting a unit, but was not believed to have been renting a room. There were more than two people involved in an altercation

inside the unit when the stabbing happened, he said.

There are at least a dozen rooms in the motel and a number of them also had visitors, he said. Police have recovered surveillance video from the motel that shows people’s movements, but the video also captures other people who were not involved. Detectives are working to sort out who is who.

“From our information it would appear this was a targeted attack,” Reid said.

On Sunday, homicide detectives focused on interviewing witnesses and gathering surveillance video. Reid said the detectives were going to work overnight night to try to identify any suspect or suspects and get a clearer picture of what happened.

A large stretch of Queenston was blocked all day Sunday as police gathered evidence left by the victim between the motel and where he collapsed.

In addition to the motel, police tape blocked the entrance to a convenience store, hair and nail salon and the apartment building, however, police said none of the other buildings are connected to the crime.

Residents in the neighbourhood said the motel has a reputation for trouble, including drugs. Reid confirmed police have been called there before, but said it was too soon to know what may have contributed to the homicide.

Police are expected to remain at the scene Monday.

This marks the 10th homicide in Hamilton this year.
