Gas tanker collides with dump truck

-

A crash between a gas truck and dump truck Monday morning at Highway 56 and Golf Club Road in Binbrook led to road closures and between 2,000 to 4,000 litres of diesel fuel spilling into a ditch, according to the provincial Ministry of the Environment (MOE). The Hamilton Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash at 8:30 a.m., along with six other fire trucks to deal with what a fire department official tweeted was an “actively leaking” tank. No injuries resulted from the collision. A fire department spokesperson told The Spectator in an email that crews “quickly contained the spill and placed absorbent booms in the ditch to contain the fuel.” MOE spokesperson Gary Wheeler told The Spec that ministry staff reported to the scene and assisted in the spill containment efforts. “Once the damaged fuel tanker truck has been removed from the site, cleanup of the spilled fuel and ditch will begin,” he wrote in an email at 4:45 p.m. “The cleanup will take approximately six to eight hours.” In the aftermath of the crash Hamilton police closed several roads and intersections in the area.
