Fish and chips are back at the Dewitt Park Plaza in Stoney Creek.

Following in the footsteps of Lakeport and Stoney’s, Fin City Fish and Chips opened in early November at 521 Hwy. 8.

Fin City’s ninth and southernmost location is the restaurant’s first outlet in the Golden Horseshoe, with other locations sprinkled across cottage country in places such as Tiverton, Honey Harbour and Owen Sound.

Franchisees and Stoney Creek residents Jimmy and Pooja Shah opened the newest Fin City outlet in early November.

Founder Matthew Taylor, in town for the Nov. 27 ribbon cutting of the Stoney Creek location, was inspired to launch Fin City by his grandmother from Gander, N.L.

“The brand started out with my grandma’s batter recipe from down east,” Taylor said. “She had fish and chips in Gander for 46 years.”

So what’s the secret to great fish and chips? In short, it’s all about the batter and the fish.

“We freshly cut our halibut,” Taylor said. “We don’t bring it in frozen. Our halibut is Alaskan. Alaskan halibut is a very light, flaky fish. It’s the most preferred. That’s why we’ve won awards all through Simcoe County and Grey Bruce.”

In addition to halibut, the restaurant serves haddock, cod, pickerel and seasonal specialties including perch and rainbow trout.

Fin City also offers a range of appetizers, chicken wings, salads, wraps and award-winning poutines topped with pulled pork, chicken, steak or creamy dill sauce.

The business started six years ago, with eight locations in Ontario and a ninth in Kelowna, B.C.

After making a name for itself throughout the Lake Huron and Georgian Bay areas, Taylor said customers urged Fin City to open in the Greater Toronto or Hamilton area.

Jimmy and Pooja Shah have received a positive response from the community thus far.

“The support that we have seen from the community has been very good,” Jimmy said.

Fin City Stoney Creek currently offers takeout and delivery.
