With the rising of spring comes the unveiling of something stinky.

Poop. And it’s everywhere. Parks, front lawns — and, for many, their own backyards. Walking through green space has turned into a game of Battleship.

But rejoice, for there is a budding industry that exists for the purpose of removing poo.

Paws to Bark is a small, womanrun business that scoops that poop. The service was started nearly 12 years ago when owner Jessica Philip needed a career change and wanted to use her skills to help others.

Her company focuses on affordable rates, though spring costs are higher due to the amount of waste accrued over the winter months.

Rates are based off the number of dogs, starting at $15.50/week for one pup.

Though Philip says her clients are mostly in Hamilton, her business also services Burlington, Brantford, Oakville and Milton.

For Michaela Christou, it was the pandemic and a shift in university plans that sparked her foray into the waste game.

The Poo Crew operates out of Haldimand County, but also scoops poop throughout the Hamilton area. Affordability is also on the mind of Christou, who wants to ensure “we fit into people’s budgets.”

Prices for winter cleanups start at $50 and can range up to $100, depending on yard size and number of dogs.

“Some of our senior clients tend to be on a pension or a small income, and in most cases, we do adjust our prices for them,” Christou says.

And for the cat lovers among us, Paws to Bark does offer a bucket service for cat litter for $8 per week.
