Macdonald statue

-

Regarding “Don’t keep Macdonald’s statue hidden: Eisenberger” (April 30): While I recognize the value of historical context, I empathize with the Hamilton Indigenous community’s wishes to remove the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald from Gore Park. Many of Canada’s founding fathers carried out racist actions against various minority groups while building our nation. Keeping statues of these individuals and naming institutions after them is a constant reminder of this dark legacy as well the systemic racism which remains entrenched in our social fabric.

In addition, it further alienates marginalized groups by sending the message that we continue to honour individuals who are guilty of genocide, racist policies and owning slaves.
