Police say victim was hit deliberately

A 43-year-old Hamilton man is expected to survive after allegedly being deliberately hit by someone driving a pickup truck outside a Stoney Creek car wash where he witnessed an attempted break-in.

The victim saw a large commercial truck allegedly intentionally crash into MJ’s EZEE Clean car wash at 264 Highway 8 around 7 a.m. Sunday in order to break into the building, said police spokesperson Jackie Penman. The truck was stolen.

Police allege the suspects spotted the witness and deliberately chased after him in a getaway vehicle — a dark-coloured, two-door Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The suspects fled the scene in the pickup after hitting the 43-year-old, police said.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

The homicide unit is probing the hit-and-run because of the alleged deliberate nature of the crime.

Using vehicles to smash into businesses to get inside is a tactic that has been commonly used in commercial thefts, often where suspects are trying to get cash. It’s not clear how many suspects were involved. No suspect description was released and police continue to search for the pickup.

The collision caused extensive damage to the building.

Hamilton police have some video of the incident, but continue to ask for anyone with more video or information to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Robert DiIanni at 905-546-3836. To remain anonymous contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or crimestoppershamilton.com.
