Two women taken to hospital following shooting on Hwy. 6
Police looking for witnesses after incident early Sunday in Flamborough
A stretch of Highway 6 in Flamborough was closed for hours on Sunday while police investigated a shooting that sent two women to hospital.
Provincial police received a report of a shooting on Highway 6 near Concession 5 Road East just after 5 a.m., they said in a release Sunday evening.
Paramedics arrived at the Highway 6 location shortly after 5 a.m. and “discovered two injured parties on scene,” Supt. Dave Thompson said in an email.
Two women, who are believed to be in their 20s, were taken to hospital, in “critical, life-threatening” and serious conditions, he said.
No update on their conditions was provided by police Sunday evening.
“The investigation is in the early stages,” said spokesperson Sgt. Martin Hill.
Hill said late Sunday that investigators were “working diligently” and didn’t answer Spectator questions about any suspect or motive, whether it was targeted, who was shot and the circumstances.
At around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, several police cruisers and other vehicles could be seen on the west side of the highway in the southbound lanes.
Highway 6 was closed for most of Sunday, reopening at around 5:40 p.m., according to OPP. In the afternoon, a steady stream of southbound traffic detoured through the community of Millgrove, jamming its quiet residential streets.
“In incidences such as this, investigative steps need to be taken to ensure that all the evidence is collected properly,” Hill said.
Provincial police’s Highway Safety Division and Forensic Identification Services is investigating. Anyone with information, including dash camera footage from the area between 5 and 6 a.m., to contact Burlington OPP at 905-681-2511.
