Speed, impairment ruled out as factors in Copetown crash that left couple dead
Hamilton police say speed and alcohol were not factors in a Copetown collision that left two people dead last week.
Emergency crews responded to Highway 52 and Powerline Road West around 10:40 a.m. on Friday for reports of a crash involving a black Ford Focus and white Chevrolet Impala.
The occupants of the Chevrolet — a husband and wife in their 80s — were both killed, while the lone driver of the Ford — a woman in her 50s — was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. She’s since been released and is now recovering at home.
Police shed new light on what led to the crash Tuesday, saying in a release that the Chevrolet was travelling south on Highway 52 when it lost control, veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the northbound Ford.
With speed and impairment ruled out, Const. Indy Bharaj told The Spectator investigators continue to probe for other factors that could’ve contributed to the crash.
Those include the condition of the road and the Chevrolet, such as whether its tires had good grip, Bharaj said. Police are also looking into the Chevrolet driver’s medical condition.
“An autopsy hasn’t been done yet and we’re still waiting on medical information,” he said.
Bharaj said the victims’ family have asked police to not identify them publicly.
Police are appealing to witnesses or residents who were in the area at the time of the collision to check their dash cameras for surveillance footage.
