Family pets ‘unaccounted for’ after Norfolk County house fire
Home destroyed on Highway 6 west of Port Dover
A house fire west of Port Dover on Monday left several family pets missing.
Firefighters from five stations in Norfolk County, along with police and paramedics, responded to the alarm around 2:45 p.m.
Firefighters found the house on Highway 6 engulfed in flames and worked for over two hours to extinguish the blaze.
“Despite high winds, the fire was contained to the home, nearby vehicle and two small outbuildings,” fire prevention officer Cory Armstrong-Smith said in a media release.
There were no injuries to the home’s occupants or firefighters.
“But several family pets are not accounted for,” Armstrong-Smith said.
In an email to The Spectator, Armstrong-Smith said no animals were found as firefighters battled the fire and later surveyed the scene.
“At least one dog was witnessed fleeing into the wooded area behind, and the owners evacuated a caged bird prior to our arrival,” Armstrong-Smith said.
“Due to the extent of damage, I cannot verify how many (if any) were still inside and perished in the blaze.”
The loss is estimated at $600,000. The home and its contents are reportedly insured.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Highway 6 was closed for several hours between Port Ryerse Road and Highway 24.
