Tips on helping your dog relieve spring allergies

- AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from allergies, and allergy season is in full swing. Common allergens that can affect dogs are things that can be inhaled (like mould, dust mites or pollen), different foods and skin irritants.

To help dog owners manage and help relieve their pup’s allergies, the American Kennel Club offers the following tips:

Common signs of allergies in dogs include itching, red inflamed skin, dry skin, loss of fur, eye irritation and excessive licking of paws.

The following are treatment options that can help your dog beat their spring allergies:

■ Set up a vet visit. Speak with your veterinarian about the best treatment plan for your dog. This may mean a prescription for cortisones, antihistamines or medicated shampoos. The vet might also recommend giving your pup Omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

■ Food testing. Your dog might be having a reaction to something in their food. Ask your vet about trying an elimination diet with your dog. Feed them one protein at a time and see if you can determine what is triggering a reaction.

■ Skin treatments. If it’s skin allergies that your dog is experiencing, you might want to try aloe vera to ease irritation and provide relief. Always consult your veterinarian prior to applying any type of skin treatment to ensure it is safe for your dog and will not cause further irritation.
