HORROR STALKS THE HALLWAYS of Delta Secondary School — again

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ latest horror flick to film at former high school

Horror movies appear to be finding a home at the former Delta Secondary School.

“Fear Street: Prom Queen” has been shooting at the Main Street East landmark this month.

It is a new addition to the trilogy of films on Netflix about the evil and bloody goings-on in the cursed town of Shadyside. The movies are all based on the “Fear Street” series by writer R.L. Stine, who has been called the “Stephen King of children’s literature.”

The movie follows other horror films which have filmed at the school over the last year, such as the prequel to Stephen King’s “IT” called “Welcome to Derry” and “Whistle,” which is about students stumbling upon an Aztec death whistle.

At the school, the Main Street sign said Shadyside High School and told students to “Get Ready for Prom.” An old yellow school bus with the school’s name on it was parked on the property.

“Fear Street: Prom Queen” is based on a standalone 1992 book called “The Prom Queen” by Stine. He is perhaps best known for his “Goosebumps” series, which has been made into movies featuring Jack Black as the author.

According to Netflix, the movie is set in 1988 at a high school dance the town of Shadyside “will never forget.”

The popular girls at Shadyside High are busily campaigning in a teenage backstabbing way to win the crown at the prom dance, Netflix says, “when a gutsy outsider” arrives in the school halls. “Other girls start mysteriously disappearing” and “the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”

The film stars a young ensemble cast; Hamilton-born Suzanna Son (“The Idol” TV show), India Fowler (“The Amazing Mr. Blunden” TV movie), Fina Strazza (“Madame Secretary,” “Law & Order”) David Iacono (“Joker” and “The Flight Attendant” TV show) and Ella Rubin (“Gossip Girl” TV show).

Adult actors include Lili Taylor (“Mystic Pizza,” “Six Feet Under”), Katherine Waterston (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) and Chris Klein from the “American Pie” series. The film is from Chernin Entertainment, which filmed scenes for Netflix’s fantasy movie “Slumberland” at Mohawk College in 2021.

Meanwhile, another horror film starring Sheila McCarthy recently wrapped up shooting in Hamilton. “The Voices of Our Mother” tells the story of a family which is brought together when their matriarch (McCarthy) falls ill, only to find that their lineage is connected by more than blood.

It was written and directed by actor Mark O’Brien, who also has a role in the picture. It is produced by Hamiltonian Chris Giroux and Justin Rebelo for Vortex Productions.

The film also features Georgina Reilly (“Quantum Leap”) and Carolina Bartczak (Netflix’s “Painkiller,” which shot scenes in Hamilton in 2021).

“The Voices of Our Mother” filmed at such locales as Christ’s Church Cathedral, MacNab Presbyterian Church, a home on Lower Lions Club Road in Ancaster, the

Factory Media Centre and an elegant French-style chateau on Bay Street South.

Actor Eric Roberts was in Flamborough the first week of April, shooting a movie for the Lifetime Channel. There has been no public information released on the flick, but it is called “Prime Movers.” Roberts has been in such films as “Runaway Train” (1985), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Babylon” (2022).

“Prime Movers” shot at such locales as Josling Farms near Carlisle, MK Auto Solutions on Highway 6, Breezy Corners restaurant on Highway 6 and Pier 18 on Industrial Drive in the city’s bayfront.

The Hamilton-filmed horror movie “Humane” will have its city premiere at the Playhouse Cinema next Friday at 7 p.m. The movie, helmed by Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of director David Cronenberg, will play there each night until May 2.

There might be a Q&A after the first screening.

“Humane” shot scenes at the Playhouse when it filmed in Hamilton in October-November 2022. The majority of filming was done at Ravenscliffe Castle. The film stars Jay Baruchel, Peter Gallagher and Emily Hampshire.
