NEEDS: The Sabres are the NHL’s worst offensive team and in the bottom five in defense. But more than anything, they desperately need someone to take the offensive pressure off Jack Eichel.
AVAILABILITY: A trade-deadline darling and a whole lot of spare parts.
UFAs: E. Kane (LW), B. Pouliot (LW), C. Johnson (G), J. Nolan (RW), J. Josefson (C), J. Falk (D), J. Gorges (D)
TRADE BAIT: Evander Kane is a crown jewel of this year’s deadline among teams looking for an impact rental. He comes with baggage, but there is no denying his offensive ability. And in an environment with strong leadership, he would almost certainly stay in line and produce in hopes of impressing off-season suitors. GM Jason Botterill has the luxury of listening to offers until the last minute, if he chooses, and taking the best one. That will definitely involve futures, a commodity in which the Sabres have the most interest. Once again, this is a lost season, so getting the best lottery odds possible and a crack at Rasmus Dahlin is not a bad thing.
