MACLEAN WAS WATCHING THE team in training camp and saw Wack was 6-foot-6. “I said to him, ‘Wack, did you grow?’ ” MacLean said. “And he just said, ‘Yup,’ with a huge smile on his face.” He was great with computers and had a future in video editing. His teammates liked playing with him, both because of his skills and his on-ice demeanor, which was not a reflection of his easygoing nature off the ice. “Look out if you ever pushed the wrong button with him,” Garinger said. “You didn’t want to take a kid as big as Stephen and anger him.”
