Message from the Prime Minister of Canada
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my condolences to Wayne and the entire Gretzky family on the passing of Canada’s hockey dad, Walter Gretzky.
Canadians and individuals all around the world are mourning the loss of Walter, and reflecting on the profound impact that he had on the sport of hockey. His presence was immense, and his compassion was undeniable. Before Walter became an icon whose charisma and humble personality inspired countless people, he was a father who taught his son Wayne the principles of hockey in the backyard rink that he built in Brantford, Ontario. The lessons he taught are of hard work, determination, and never giving up on your dreams. He truly exemplified what it means to be a hockey parent and a wonderful role model.
He was devoted to his family and his community. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him knew the passion and humility he exuded as he worked with many charities over the years. He represented the best of what it means to be Canadian.
Walter’s legacy lives on in every indoor and backyard hockey rink, and in every moment we speak of greatness.
