Centennial grad named to Team Canada
Centennial Secondary School graduate and former Belleville Bulldog, Sara Svoboda, 23, has been named to the 31- player Team Canada roster for its upcoming three- match tour of the United Kingdom, Rugby Canada has announced.
A back- row forward, Svoboda and her Team Canada teammates depart for London on Sunday with three matches scheduled over three weeks versus England, Wales and Scotland.
Svoboda has represented the national senior women’s team three times and was an Ontario University Athletics All- Star with the bronze medal McMaster Marauders this season. Among her accomplishments during the 2018 Ontario university campaign was a 40- point performance to lead McMaster to a record- setting 109- 0 playoff victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Svoboda was an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association silver medalist with Centennial and a Canadian gold medalist with Team Ontario two years ago. She played last season for the Brantford Harlequins, helping that club achieve an undefeated record of 11- 0- 1.
Cindy Nelles, a St. Theresa graduate and veteran of the Canadian team, will also make the journey to the UK with Team Canada. She is a No. 8 and former winner of Canadian Interuniversity Sport Player of the Year accolades.
Nelles has represented Canada in two World Cup competitions and captained McMaster University to the 2015 national championship in Kingston. Among her noteworthy achievements was being named the Emerging Player of the Year in rugby in the Americas.
