Cen­ten­nial grad named to Team Canada

Cen­ten­nial Sec­ondary School grad­u­ate and for­mer Belleville Bull­dog, Sara Svoboda, 23, has been named to the 31- player Team Canada ros­ter for its up­com­ing three- match tour of the United King­dom, Rugby Canada has an­nounced.

A back- row for­ward, Svoboda and her Team Canada team­mates depart for Lon­don on Sun­day with three matches sched­uled over three weeks ver­sus Eng­land, Wales and Scot­land.

Svoboda has rep­re­sented the na­tional se­nior women’s team three times and was an On­tario Univer­sity Ath­let­ics All- Star with the bronze medal McMaster Ma­raud­ers this sea­son. Among her ac­com­plish­ments dur­ing the 2018 On­tario univer­sity cam­paign was a 40- point per­for­mance to lead McMaster to a record- set­ting 109- 0 play­off vic­tory over the Lau­rier Golden Hawks.

Svoboda was an On­tario Fed­er­a­tion of School Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion sil­ver medal­ist with Cen­ten­nial and a Cana­dian gold medal­ist with Team On­tario two years ago. She played last sea­son for the Brant­ford Har­le­quins, help­ing that club achieve an un­de­feated record of 11- 0- 1.

Cindy Nelles, a St. Theresa grad­u­ate and vet­eran of the Cana­dian team, will also make the jour­ney to the UK with Team Canada. She is a No. 8 and for­mer win­ner of Cana­dian In­teruni­ver­sity Sport Player of the Year ac­co­lades.

Nelles has rep­re­sented Canada in two World Cup com­pe­ti­tions and cap­tained McMaster Univer­sity to the 2015 na­tional cham­pi­onship in Kingston. Among her note­wor­thy achieve­ments was be­ing named the Emerg­ing Player of the Year in rugby in the Amer­i­cas.
