H ow each day goes for Sue Dhillon depends entirely on who walks through her office door. The Guidance Counsellor at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy has students coming and going on a regular basis, each with individual questions and requests. Dhillon assists students on topics ranging from personal issues, to educational planning at the school, to postsecondary and career decisions. “I really enjoy the one-on-one interactions and being able to connect with my students on an individual basis,” she says. “This level of personal and individual interaction really comes in handy when I assist students in deciding their future goals and aspirations.” At the start of each school year, Dhillon meets with all of the grade 12 students to discuss their plans moving forward. She says watching the progress through their final year of schooling is a very rewarding experience. “In the spring, it is always wonderful to see the excitement on the students’ faces, as they meet their goals and anticipate the next stage in their educational career.” It is a vocation that fits perfectly for Dhillon. “I have always loved the learning process and enjoy helping people, especially the young. Education seemed like a very natural choice for me.”
