Af­ter try­ing out a few paths in her youth, Mary Gau­thier found the per­fect ca­reer in ed­u­ca­tion. Now Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor at the Wern­ham West Cen­tre for Learn­ing at Up­per Canada Col­lege, Gau­thier dis­cov­ered her love for teach­ing at Ry­er­son Univer­sity in the early child­hood ed­u­ca­tion pro­gram. She con­tin­ued her train­ing in spe­cial ed­u­ca­tion cour­ses over the years, in­clud­ing pro­grams on dys­lexia and dis­pute res­o­lu­tion. “Not only did I love teach­ing,” she says, “I loved learn­ing.” Now she brings that love of learn­ing to the cen­tre, where she works with teach­ers and stu­dents through plan­ning and strate­gic meet­ings. She helps to de­velop the school’s ed­u­ca­tional ap­proach, and her depart­ment regularly works with teach­ers to fa­cil­i­tate teach­ing learn­ing skills. Gau­thier says her own ap­proach to ed­u­ca­tion has evolved over her teach­ing ca­reer and that it’s not about “telling” stu­dents how they can im­prove or de­ter­min­ing what they need. “Ed­u­ca­tion is more about ask­ing the right ques­tions and lis­ten­ing to what stu­dents are say­ing,” she says. Gau­thier notes the im­por­tance of “tak­ing time to de­velop a re­la­tion­ship, to de­velop trust, to let stu­dents set their own goals, and then sup­port them.
