Former Legion employee charged with theft
Woman alleged to have taken over $25,000
A Happy Valley-Goose Bay woman charged with allegedly stealing money from the local Royal Canadian Legion branch made an appearance in provincial court on Aug. 27.
Sonya Garland is being charged with a single count of theft over $5,000 for allegedly stealing the money between Jan. 1, 2011, and June 30, 2014, when she worked for the Legion.
According to the prosecutor in the case, Jennifer Standen, the Legion had a forensic audit done and discovered a substantial sum of money was missing. Following an investigation by the RCMP, Garland was charged with allegedly stealing just over $25,000 over the threeyear period.
Garland asked the court for more time to secure a lawyer and her case was put over until Oct. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in Happy Valley-Goose Bay provincial court.
The Labradorian contacted the Legion for comment but did not receive a response as of press time.
