Local golfer Kanani Davis from North West River has returned to competition golf with some outstanding success in recent weeks.

Davis is no stranger to competitive golf, but her recent successes come after a three-year hiatus from the sport.

It’s only been this summer that she picked up the sticks and made her way back to the course.

“We moved back to Labrador in the middle of July after spending three years in St Johns and have been working over at Muskrat Falls which has been hectic, but I try to play nine holes of golf at least three to four days per week,” Davis told The Labradorian.

Davis recently entered and won the Open Female Division at the Innu Masters Tournament in Sept-Iles, Quebec, and the Tamarack Golf Club Merchants Open in Labrador City. Her most recent victory was in the Labrador Cup, hosted this year in Goose Bay.

All three tournament victories were played under the best of the stick or Individual Stroke Play format, where her closest win was by seven strokes in the Innu Masters event.

Davis, who started playing golf during her mid 20’s while she was at University, says she is still learning the game and takes a lot of advice from her husband, Bud.

“I am struggling with my short game at the moment, I really need to work on that. I am very confident with my drivers, I know that I can give the ball a good hit, but I just need to be more consistent with my short game,” she says.

Davis was invited by the SeptIles Golf Course to come back and compete in their Merchants Tournament Sept. 1-3.

“Golf is such a good sport, it teaches you patience and (about) not giving up. Even after you have played a bad shot, you just have to reset and keep moving forward,” says Davis. “I love playing golf as I love being on the land. I find peace when I am out there. I would love to see more young girls playing the sport.”

Kanani Davis also won the Labrador Cup, played between the Amaruk Golf Club of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the Tamarack Golf Club of Labrador City, hosted this year in Goose Bay.
