Sarabeth Kippenhuck of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has found a way to spread the joy of giving this Christmas by hosting a food drive for people living in Nain.

Kippenhuck has reached out to people through social media asking for donations of nonperishable food items to help fill the community’s food bank shelves.

The response has been overwhelming, she said when contacted by phone on Nov. 26.

“This is my fourth day collecting donations. I didn’t realize just how much support I’d get. I’m hoping to get a pallet full of food.” Kippenhuck said.

The support goes beyond the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area, she said.

“We’re going out to Labrador City this weekend because we have people out there wanting to donate boxfuls of food,” the 26-year-old said.

Kippenhuck said she realizes how hard it is, especially for families living on the north coast of Labrador, to keep food on the table.

People are donating everything from juice boxes to jams, crackers to cereal, snacks for babies and children to boxes of diapers.

Kippenhuck will continue to collect food until Dec. 20 and will ship them to Nain in time for Christmas.

She is now looking for a sponsor/business to cover the cost of shipping.

Kippenhuck said her parents—Rosetta and Irwin Kippenhuck—taught her from an early age about the importance of giving. However, she said, this is the first big project she’s undertaken and, thanks to the power of social media, she’s certain it will be a success.

When contacted about Kippenhuck’s kind gesture, Brenda Jararuse, one of the volunteers spearheading the food bank project in Nain, said it’s amazing to see an outpouring of support from others.

“We really appreciate any size donations, and the thought and kindness that goes to gathering donations,” Jararuse said. “As we are a new organization, we really appreciate all the help we are getting.

“It will really make a difference for the food bank, and more importantly the people and families this food will be helping.”

Anyone who would like to make a donation to Kippenhuck’s food drive can message her on Facebook (Sarabeth Kippenhuck).
