The Boy With Two Names, a London Free Press story about an Indigenous family's journey through the Sixties Scoop, is nominated for a national Digital Publishing Award.

Written by Randy Richmond, the online story that includes photos, video, illustrations and charts was published on March 30, 2023.

The Boy With Two Names is one of 10 finalists in the category of Best Feature Article: Long.

“The Boy With Two Names is the biggest piece we have put together at The Free Press in some years and the digital-only aspects of it brought the package together in ways we have never done before, so we are immensely proud of it,” editor-in-chief Joe Ruscitti said.

Video editor Calvi Leon, illustrator and graphic artist Brice Hall and podcaster Rachel Gilbert are included in the Free Press nomination.

Eric Volmers, an entertainment writer for the Postmedia chain that includes The London Free Press, is nominated in the category of best arts and culture storytelling for a story on Canadian musician and writer Rae Spoon.

Established in 2015, the Digital Publishing Awards recognize excellence in Canadian digital journalism. The Globe and Mail, Le Devoir, The Narwhal, Canadian Geographic and the Toronto Star are on the list of finalists announced Thursday for more than two dozen awards ranging from best digital editorial package to best podcast.

Winners will be named at an event June 7 in Toronto.

The Boy With Two Names also was nominated for a National Newspaper Award in the local reporting category. Reporter Jane Sims is nominated for a National Newspaper Award in the short feature category for her story on Salman Afzaal, who was killed with his family by a white nationalist.
