YOUR WEEKEND, OUR PICKS

-

Mom’s big day, a big science celebration and more. Live it up this Mother’s Day weekend, with our picks of things to do, see and savour in the London region.

THE FIVE

Left your Mother’s Day plans to the last minute? Here are some eleventh-hour ideas:

Spa day. From day spas to nail salons, there’s no shortage of pampering destinations in London. Swing by your mom’s favourite haunt to grab her go-to skincare products or a gift card, or, better yet, pick a time and make a momchild date of it.

Brunch substitute. Striking out on reservations? Hit up the Western Fair Market on Saturday for some fresh ingredients, then whip up something special and handmade for mom.

Weekend retreat. Team up with your siblings and get your mom a night away some place not too far away. An overnight stay along lake Huron or Erie, now that spring is here, or a staycation at a bedand-breakfast or inn right here in London might just be the relaxing ticket your mother needs.

Family photos. The ones on the wall at your parents’ house are looking a little dated. Find a London photographer you like, a location for the shoot and set a date with the rest of your kin and gift the images to your mom.

Show tickets. There are many to choose from. If mom is a classic rock fan, it looks like there are still tickets available for iconic Canadian rocker Neil Young’s July 13 show at Rock the Park. If the theatre is more your mom’s jam, the Stratford Festival’s new season is just getting underway and the Huron County Playhouse is getting ready to launch its next month.

FOR THE KIDS

Looking for some weekend plans with the little ones? Here are a few local picks:

Port Stanley Terminal Rail. All aboard this scenic train from St. Thomas to Port Stanley. It’s back for another summer season and tickets are $15 for adults and $9 for kids. Can’t make it there this weekend? Rides go Saturdays and Sundays and Victoria Day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Beauty and the Beast. Tickets to the London Christian secondary school’s production of the classic fairy tale are $20. The show runs Saturday afternoon and evening.

Science rendezvous. Western University’s alumni stadium is the place to be for the city’s biggest science celebration Saturday. Check out outdoor booths, see live shows and demonstrations at this handson science extravaganza. The free event runs from 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. And there’s free parking, too.
