Edson Replacement School Naming Our New School.
rustees discussed the naming process for the new K to 5 replacement school that is currently under construction in Edson. Names for the new school will be forwarded to a School Naming Committee with members including school representatives, local trustees, administration and school council represen-tatives who will forward three names in order of preference to the Board for their consideration. The se-lection of the final name will be approved by the Board at the Public Board Meeting on December 14, 2016. More information on how to submit a name will be available by September 26 and the deadline for name submissions is Monday, October 31.
“We are looking forward to engaging with the Edson community on selecting a name for our new el-ementary school and hope that the Naming Committee receives a large number of submissions for them to review,” commented Vice-Chair and local Edson Trustee Joan Zaporosky. “This is a wonderful opportunity for community members to have an active role in recognizing local history with others in nominating a name for a facility that future generations will enjoy.”
Other News in Brief
The Learning Services department developed and implemented an Inclusive Education strategic plan focused on the Collaborative Response Model during the 2015-16 school year. They will be continuing to refine the plan as well as the roles and responsibilities of the School Link Team to ensure that GYPSD students receive the supports and resources they require to be successful in their learning. In addition, the Learning and Technology team will be collaborating with the College of Alberta School Superintendents to develop an implementation strategy for the division based on the Learning and Technology Policy Framework developed by Alberta Educa-tion in 2013.
A Practice Standards Advisory Committee is being established with members to provide guidance, advice and leadership to facilitate the appropriate and successful implementation of the upcoming Teaching Quality Stan-dards and Principal Quality Standards that are anticipated to be part of a new ministerial order by Alberta Ed-ucation in the fall of 2016. Membership may include teaching staff, administrative staff, parents, students, and senior administration.
Trustees approved Superintendent Gray’s attendance at the AASA National Conference on Education from March 2-4, 2017 as part of his professional development plan.
The Board reviewed their Annual Work Plan to ensure that monthly activities planned for the year continue to align with various school events and celebrations that require trustee attendance and/or recognition.
A total of 762 field trips taken by GYPSD students across the division in 2015-16 included a wide range of activ-ities from taking part in athletic team travels to experiential learning adventures. Hinton Trustee Shirley Caputo offered a sincere appreciation on behalf of the Board to all school councils and community members who contin-uously provide significant assistance, including volunteer work and financial help, in ensuring students are able to participate in these valuable and enjoyable opportunities.
