Love, thanks and holidays

- by June McInnes

It was our anniversary the other day, 36 years of goodness married to my soul mate.

We couldn’t celebrate because of work commitments on the day so a couple of days later we went for a meal together. It was nice to have a date night and enjoy just our own company together, with no phones, tv or anything else, just the two of us.

I love his company, he is a thoroughly interesting person and even though we’ve been together quite a few years he’s still the best and the most stimulating man I’ve ever met, lucky for me then that we got married.

When our meal arrived, it looked lovely and I felt spoilt because it’s not every year we’ve been able to go out, we’ve had good times and some really bad times together, not in our relationship, but in terms of work or lack of it, of being broke and almost destitute.

That’s when you realize that you either have the right partner or not. When your backs are against the wall.

It was a lovely evening out and I felt energized by it, like we could go on forever, I guess that’s the dreamer in me, the part of me who likes to dance in the rain, walk on grass barefoot and sing like no one is listening. Thank you for the feeling. In reality it would be fall or slip over dancing in the rain and get all muddy, walk barefoot on the grass and find a dog egg between my toes and my neighbours would hear me sing and think that a hippo was about to give birth and come rushing round to see what all the noise was about, but I can dream right?

This hot weather is nice and it’s lovely to go out and have a meal and not have to cook, that’s time of year I remember sweating away in kitchens, when I had a part time jobs I’ve worked in quite a few kitchens in the past from big companies to small pubs.

Hot, sweaty, fast, sometimes thankless work. Your feet killing you the sweat running off you, ready for a long cool glass of water and a sit down, so I say thank you to all those unsung heroes who work in pubs, restaurants, clubs and bars who make the hot weather bearable and night out a welcome break from the kitchen.

We’re building a deck this summer, out back, everybody’s looking forward to it. We will be able to barbecue and chill out for a while, just sit and relax, maybe have a pop or two. If we don’t achieve anything else this summer break I won’t mind so long as the deck’s done. We then have a really good excuse to invite the family over for a barbecue, wonderful.

Roll on the summer break and let’s get started I say, I’m ready to plant some more planter pots and make some scatter cushions for the chairs. All I’d need then would be some bunting and it would be perfect.

As always, I say be nice to one another, life’s too short to be mean.

Happy trails.
