Consultation – Framework on Palliative Care

-

Jim Eglinski, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, is pleased to inform residents that Health Canada has launched a public consultation on a framework for palliative care in Canada.

The consultation is a direct result of a Private Member’s Bill by Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu, the Shadow Minister of Health. Bill C-277, the Framework on Palliative Care in Canada Act, received Royal Assent in December and directs the Minister of Health, in consultation with the Provinces, to develop a framework on palliative care in Canada.

“The vast majority of Canadians do not have access to the essential health care service of palliative care. This will help address this major gap in our Canadian health care system,” stated MP Eglinski.

The framework will help support improved access to palliative care and will provide a useful reference point across jurisdictions to help identify opportunities, address gaps, and share best practices.

In the coming months, the federal government will consult directly with provinces, territories, palliative care providers, people living with illness, caregivers, and other expert stakeholders. Canadians and interested stakeholders are invited to share their views online until July 13, 2018.

The comments received during these consultations will help inform the development of the framework for palliative care, which will be tabled in Parliament by December 13, 2018.

“Improved access to home, community and palliative care will help to reduce the number of patients in hospital who would prefer to be supported and cared for at home. I encourage all those involved in palliative care, whether personally or professionally, to participate in this consultation,” concluded MP Eglinski.
