Jasper RCMP and Edson ITU charge three with impaired driving offences and issue two suspensions
On May 1, 2018 at approximately 2:30 a.m., Jasper RCMP responded to a call for a possible impaired driver leaving Whirlpool Campground. RCMP officers located the suspect on Highway 93A. The 19 year old Jasper resident was found to have a blood alcohol concentration lower than the legal limit but was issued a 30 day driving suspension and saw his vehicle seized for 7 days under the Alberta Zero Alcohol Tolerance Program for Graduated Driver’s Licences.
At the same time, another RCMP officer on patrol in the downtown area was flagged down by an employee of the Athabasca Hotel who indicated that a vehicle had been driving erratically on Patricia Street. Police located the suspect vehicle and arrested the driver after he failed a roadside screening test. The 20 year old male from Waldheim, Saskatchewan was later charged with impaired care and control of a motor vehicle.
On May 2, 2018 at 1:10 a.m.,a member of the Edson Integrated Traffic Unit stopped a vehicle on Connaught Drive for a sobriety check. Police detected an odour of liquor on the driver’s breath and demanded that the driver provide a sample of his breath. The 44 year old Spruce Grove resident failed to comply and was charged under the Criminal Code for failing to comply with an approved screening device demand. His licence was suspended and his vehicle was seized.
Less than an hour later, Jasper RCMP officers observed a vehicle driving away from one of the local pubs and conducted a traffic stop with same. The 25 year old male from Spruce Grove provided samples of his breath and was issued a 3 day licence suspension and a 3 day vehicle seizure under the Alberta Immediate Roadside Sanction Program.
On May 23, 2018 at approximately 12:45 a.m, police observed a vehicle parked the wrong way on Patricia Street in front of 4 Peaks nightclub. RCMP officers noticed that the vehicle was still running and observed a male sitting in the driver’s seat. The male subject was placed on an approved screening device and failed the test. The 26 year old Calgary resident was arrested and later charged with impaired care and control of a motor vehicle.
