Town of Edson Waste Collection Program update
Effective June 29 2018, the Town of Edson has severed its contract with Can Pak Environmental Inc. who had been engaged to provide residential waste collection services in our community. The contractor failed to live up to the standards expected of the Town for service to the public and did not meet the requirements of the contract which resulted in significant confusion, inconvenience and service disruption to our residential utility customers. The Town is working with Can Pak on provisions for a final pick up of organic waste and for retrieval of the current bins.
The Town remains committed to the philosophy of the program which will allow us to display better environmental stewardship along with safer and cleaner waste management practices. As such the Town has begun engagement with GFL Environmental Inc., the next highest rated company who submitted a proposal during the competitive procurement process in the fall of 2017, to provide organic and household waste collection services to the Town. This transition will necessitate a suspension of the organics collection program as GFL and the Town work to properly order and disperse new carts for each household. The general parameters of the program will not change; we will work with our new contractor to develop pick up schedules in the next several weeks. It is anticipated that the manufacture and deliver y time on the carts and implementation of the system under the new service provider will take between 60 and 90 days. While we recognize that this is frustrating the Town feels this is the surest way to provide high quality service to our residents and set up our waste management systems for long term success.
In the meantime, waste collection will be conducted via the historical Town-delivered system with organics and household waste co- mingled ( excluding yard waste which can be disposed of at the Recycling Depot or Landfill) and we will continue the normal schedule until the new program is ready for implementation. Please stay tuned as there will be additional information coming on this transition.
The Town of Edson is committed to responsible, efficient, quality service delivery and it is these standards which have pushed us to make this difficult decision. We accept full responsibility for the challenges and deficiencies we encountered in implementing this new service and will learn from this effort. We will make the necessary adjustments and work hard to ensure the end result is an even better product to our users.
