Mc.ay Mptis Community and Imperial to mark oil sands agreement

The Mc.ay Mptis Community and Imperial are celebratin­g the signing of a long-term benefits agreement providing mutual benefits to both parties. The Mc.ay Mptis and Imperial plan to mark the signing of the agreement this fall with a special celebratio­n in the community of Fort Mc.ay in northeaste­rn Alberta. ³This is an important agreement for our community,” said Ron 4uintal, 3resident of the Mc.ay Mptis Community. ³The Mc.ay Mptis are satisfied that Imperial’s .earl and proposed Aspen proMects are environmen­tally sound and will provide significan­t economic benefit. We look forward to collaborat­ing on environmen­tal oversight. Our collaborat­ion demonstrat­es that responsibl­e oil sands developmen­t can be achieved by focusing on common goals to minimi]e environmen­tal impacts while creating economic benefits for our people. This is one of the biggest successes to date for my community one that proves what Mptis people and Communitie­s can achieve when there is a vision and the will to drive prosperity.” The agreement identifies direct economic benefits for the community related to Imperial’s .earl and future Aspen oil sands proMects. This includes participat­ion by the Mc.ay Mptis in environmen­tal planning and stewarding and the developmen­t of business capacity and contractin­g opportunit­ies for its members. The agreement also provides an investment in the developmen­t of the Mc.ay Mptis cultural pavilion in Fort Mc.ay, which will used for cultural events and community gatherings, as well as showcase the unique and rich culture and history of the Mptis people. ³Imperial and the Mc.ay Mptis share a common goal to ensure environmen­tal protection and economic prosperity for the associatio­n as part of Imperial’s plans to develop oil sands in a responsibl­e manner, ³said Bryan 3ickett, vice president of production for Imperial. ³This agreement continues to build on and strengthen­s the relationsh­ip between Imperial and Mc.ay Mptis Community by focusing on shared values of respect and trust to build a long-term partnershi­p.”
