Al­berta RCMP mem­ber charged with as­sault

A Tofield, Al­berta RCMP mem­ber has been charged fol­low­ing a po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

On Oc­to­ber 29, 2018, Tofield RCMP were dis­patched to an lo­cal res­i­dence in re­sponse to a 911 call. Both the home­owner and a res­i­dent of the home al­lege that Cst. Dane McCarty force­fully en­tered the home and as­sault them both. The home­owner and res­i­dent suc­cess­fully re­strained Cst. McCarty and con­vinced him to leave. Cst. McCarty en­tered the home a sec­ond time and con­tin­ued his as­sault on both al­leged vic­tims. Once more, Cst. McCarty was re­strained and con­vinced to leave. Tofield RCMP mem­bers took Cst. McCarty into cus­tody im­me­di­ately there­after.

Cst. McCarty was not on duty at the time.

Cst. McCarty has been charged with break and en­ter as­sault, as­sault and two counts of mis­chief. Cst. McCarty has been re­leased on his own re­cog­ni­zance with con­di­tions to re­port to a bail su­per­vi­sor, ab­stain from al­co­hol, not to pos­sess firearms and to make no con­tact with the al­leged vic­tims.

Cst. McCarty has been sus­pended with pay pend­ing the out­come of a code of con­duct in­ves­ti­ga­tion. This par­al­lel in­ter­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion will be con­ducted re­gard­less as to the out­come of any crim­i­nal court pro­ceed­ings.

Cst. McCarty’s first ap­pear­ance in Ve­gre­ville Pro­vin­cial Court is sched­uled for Novem­ber 5, 2018.
