Cause to worry.
Cause to worry
The Chinese authorities have now detained two Canadians in China, Michael Kovrig Kovrig and Michael Spavor on national security grounds, quite likely over the arrest at the request of the U.S. of Meng Wanzhou. Canada will apply the rule of law, by the numbers. I would be surprised to see that from China. Ironically U.S. President Trumps’ tweet offering to intervene on Meng’s behalf in return for trade may just offer the executive’s lawyers a strong get out of jail card, well house arrest anyway.
It just goes to show how quickly relations can go south especially when one side is a super power and honestly, deep down, I’ve always thought China likes us not. Not just us but the entire west. Travel to China has not been advised against by Canadian authorities, yet, just caution. This affair could get a whole lot worse. Companies that have major interests in China have cause to worry. Selling oil to China? Maybe a plan B would be good idea.
The Brexit vote went to the wire. The UK government pulled it as there was no way it would win. Theresa May has undergone a vote of no confidence in her from her own party and won it. Now, she’s off to Brussels to try and clarify the deal to make it more palatable. I honestly believe still that this can be done and MPs when face with a deal or a cliff edge will go for the deal in the national interest. Petty, selfish partisan politics have no place here in my opinion. On top of the riots, France is now reeling from another terrorist attack. Whether the search for the gunman and shoot out will mute the demonstrations remains to be seen. Tax will not cure climate change. Globally if we can fix (make carbon neutral) power and transport then I think we would be in with a chance. Can we do it, globally? I don’t think so, not in the time we have. Perhaps unless some real high ups get a major climate change scare that affects them of their families. Focuses the mind better, I think.
The New Year will bring change in the U.S. Congress and with it I think uncomfortable times for Donald Trump. I’ve long thought that if this was Star Trek, McCoy and Spock would have pulled the not fit for command ploy.
