The omicron mutation or variant ( a nice safe word) is spreading at an incredible rate and, honestly I think that most if not all people globally have been or will be exposed to it at some time if it persists in its current form. Governments are panicking and lashing out at groups or supporting them to, in my view, deflect attention away from their own shortcomings and for political gain. It doesn’t seem to matter how many shots you’ve had or whether you’ve had COVID-19 before omicron doesn’t care and it’s likely to infect you so you will infect others.

So, the working theory is that if enough people have an immune response to COVID-19 then the virus will burn itself out. The initial estimates were that maybe 60-70 percent of people with immunity would do the trick. How about no. Then, 80-90 per cent should do it. With some nations, including Canada surpassing the 80 per cent mark and heading towards the 90 the answer again seems to be, How about no, in terms of catching COVID-19 anway, protection against a severe illness, ICU admission and death perhaps better but maybe its because of the mutation, which is an evolutionary process that may mean a less severe, or more severe virus. I submit, your honours, that I consider the prospect of achieving herd immunity is an impossible goal.

In Canada and other places we have no idea how many cases of COVID-19 there are, testing has gone out of the window. We have figures about hospitalisations, ICU and death but there may be flaws in that reporting too. What if someone comes in with a heart attack and is found to have COVID-19. Is that a COVID-19 stat? And, why oh why is the Canadian Government wasting valuable resources still PCR tests on international travellers? Hello? The horse left the stable long ago. Those resources could be far better employed in another area.

The Quebec government has raised the possibility of taxing unvaccinated people because of the strain they are putting on the health system. I think this is a political move with elections coming up but I read it as government bullying. Yes, I know unvaccinated people currently make up the majority of people in hospital with COVID-19 but if we let this go how much further will this concept spread? You could argue that smokers are in hospitals using up valuable resources because of personal choices, then what about people that are overweight and or don’t exercise? How far is that from saying someone is too old or too poor or too disabled to be worth treating? I shudder to think of how far the triaging could go. Nearly two years after the first wave of COVID19 and our leaders still haven’t seemed to have learned a thing. The dogma is to keep on doing the shots and ignore large parts of the rest of the world that have yet to have one. Here’s a mad idea. What about widespread antibody testing? At least people would know if they have immunity. Anyway, it’s still a gong show out there folks. Get by as best you can.
