Hodge Podge Gone again

- By June McInnes June McInnes

We had another outage this week. This time it was the internet and phone as we have a voip phone. The outage we found out the next day was huge. It covered the whole of Alberta. We were told by one of the company’s spokespeople, it was so frustrating for everybody who uses their service.

It wouldn’t have been so bad if the communications company had, well, communicated.

The first time my husband used his mobile phone to call their switchboard there was a less than helpful and slightly salty message saying they were aware of the outage. Sort of get lost in corporate speak, so to say. This went on for hours with my hubby checking every hour or so. Eventually the message changed to something else, it was like a tired voice that told us yes, they have an outage but they don’t know where and when it would be fixed, an insincere sorry for the inconvenience etc. You’re just the customer.

It was, this is all I’m going to tell you and it did go on for hours as I said.

The next day the message changed again, this time my hubby informed me it was a little more friendly saying it would be back in as soon as they could do it.

Wow! Wouldn’t it have been better if they could have been nice from the start? I’m not asking them to coddle me or anything but like I said a communication company that doesn’t communicate?, like just wow!.

Because we’ve moved a few times in the past we’ve experienced some different service providers and some were very good and some, well, let’s just say not fit for purpose.

Sadly we seem to be with one of those right now. Talking to your customers is key. We changed providers to get away from this company and now, thanks to a buyout we’re back. X marks the spot.

If too many people are dissatisfied with your service, they will vote with their feet and your business will lessen in that area. It’s only logical. It happened before.

With us not getting any information or even a timespan when or if it could be repaired for us and the thousands of other users, we were lucky enough to have the offer of Internet from our daughter and son-in-law, so we piled round there to do our online work and banking emails etc.,. We were so grateful for the offer of help from them so I say thank you Samantha and Cody for bailing us out there. Plus we got the bonus of a lovely visit, something Covid would have prevented not so long ago.

I won’t lie, I’m really disappointed in our provider, we were made to feel like we were not important enough to be told what was happening and when we could expect the service to be resumed. Like it was none of our business, I assure you as our business is digital it’s very important that we know what’s going on. As I said we have a voip phone and that was down as well, so no orders could be taken or bills paid to us or us pay others. In this day and age when the adverts on T.V.. Talk about 5G and alike and how fast it is and how you can watch T.V. in the bush etc, whilst streaming your favourite films, and listening to music. yeah, no it isn’t like that here, even on a good day, the signal struggles.

The moral here is don’t believe everything they tell you in their expensive ads.

Feel blessed every time you boot up your PC or phone and it gets a signal at all I say.

To say we feel a little raw about the whole situation is an understatement.

The internet was back up early this morning (Tuesday) I checked it at about 5.30 a.m. and it was working. I’m grateful it is, but for how long this time?Who knows? It’s like a lottery with terrible prizes. Haha. At least today we didn’t have to risk limb and life on thick snowy roads like we did yesterday. The conditions were terrible to say the least.

So whilst it’s working I’m going to make use of it. I’m still disgruntled, and I doubt there will be much of a refund for the time it was off so it’s SSDD ( same shit different day) to quote Stephen king. But he’s right.

Take care of yourselves, wash your hands, wear a mask if you want to and please, be nice to one another…..
