The people need to understand the proper Etiquette of the Masjid

- By: Mehboob Hajee

The last few days, I have had the opportunity to make my salats at a few local masjids. What I can say is that the people need to understand the proper etiquette of the masjid. What is really annoying are the following: 1. People talking in loud voices. I came early so that i can make up for the salat I missed. People can see I am praying, but they still insist on talking in a loud voice. I had to say SHH a few times, but this had no effect on them. I even had to request an Imam to make Khutbah on Friday on the proper etiquette of the masjid in this regard. 2. People blocking the way. In one masjid, the entrance to the wudoo place is very narrow. Yet people insist on gathering around the entrance and chit-chatting. I had to say Excuse Me a few times, but it had no effect on them. People also block the passage way after the Fard salat is over and some people wish to leave. The gaps where there is passage for movement is blocked by people gathering to chit-chat. 3. Cell phones. ALL masjids I have been to have signs to turn cell phones off. Yet people continue to ignore this, and in the middle of salat, the cell phone rings. These are the main points, I am sure there are many other sources of irritation.
