Local credit union installing solar panels to aid efficiency

-

The East Coast Credit Union is becoming more environmentally friendly.

On Friday, the New Glasgow branch began installing solar panels to make it more energy efficient and to reduce its environmental footprint.

Last fall the credit union became a member of the Antigonish Community Energy Co-op, a newly formed co-operative that came together to advocate the adoption of solar energy. The credit union’s board of directors was eager to work collaboratively with another co-operative that has a mission to encourage energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship.

“With the guidance of the ACE Co-op, we had a site assessment at our New Glasgow branch and with a positive result from the assessment we became part of the first bulk purchase of the equipment for the creation of solar energy,” said a release.

Investing in renewable energy is the credit union’s latest effort. Recent building renovations in various locations have included a cistern water system to recycle rainwater, a green roof and a geothermal heating and cooling system. Its branches have also made significant progress in reducing waste and paper usage through various initiatives.

As well, East Coast Credit union offers The Eco Loan, a unique product that gives discounted rates on loans to members when they invest in solar energy systems and other energy-efficient products.

“This partnership supports our effort to be an environmental stewardship leader in the business communities where we operate. Our hope is through this partnership we will encourage other businesses to consider similar investments in an effort to improve our collective environmental future.”
