NEW GLASGOW – It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Sylvia (Wadden) Matheson, age 88, in the Aberdeen Hospital on Wednesday, June 15, 2016.

Born in New Glasgow on August 21, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Edward Wadden and Mary (Hastings) Wadden.

Sylvia was predecease­d by her husband of 58 years, Fraser, in 2010. Survived by children, Alan (Toronto), Sandra (Halifax), Susan (formerly of Ottawa), two grandchild­ren, Andrew (Toronto), Erin (Calgary), sister-in-law, June Wadden and numerous nieces and nephews. Sylvia was predecease­d by sisters, Elizabeth MacDonald, Mary Arthrell, brothers, Charles, William, Alex, Albert, brothersin-law, Edward Arthrell, Charles MacDonald, Hugh Matheson and sisters-in-law, Mary Wadden, Hazel Matheson.

Sylvia attended New Glasgow High School and Maritime Business College. Her work career included 25 years with Metropolit­an Life Insurance Company and short assignment­s with several local businesses, before she retired in 1989.

Sylvia was a faithful member of St. George’s Anglican Church and a founding member of the Sanctuary Guild and ACW. She was a member of the New Glasgow Gyrette Club.

Sylvia treasured her yearly trips to Florida and summers spent at D&B, Black Point.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 20, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Avenue, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 21, at 2 p.m. from St George’s Anglican Church with Rev. Lidvald Haugen-Strand and Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiatin­g. Burial will be in Lorne Street Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in Sylvia’s memory may be made to St. George’s Anglican Church, VON Pictou County, or the Palliative Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital.

Sylvia was a warm and gracious lady always putting family first and helpful to others. Sylvia will be sadly missed and live on in our hearts forever.
