Celebrating Junior Achievement month
February is Junior Achievement month the month is designed to celebrate and promote the entrepreneur spirit in youth. Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization that provides hands-on experience in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities. The organization offers three educational pillars: financial literacy, workplace readiness, and entrepreneurship. JA has grown in the almost 100 years it has been running to be a worldwide organization running in over 120 countries.
Indie-Pendant is a JA Company that was formed back in October as a part of the company program. This program is volunteer run by two advisors, Shannon MacLean and Bradley Barkhouse, with support from the program manager based at the head office in Halifax. The Company Program is a student run business venture that runs for 18 weeks, allowing students to discover the risks, challenges and rewards of starting a business.
The Indie-Pendant company has been making and selling necklaces with sea glass and $2 from every sale is being donated to Pictou County Mental Health. The company program will be ending on March 8 with a shareholders meeting and the company is almost sold out of all necklaces, but they are still available at the gift shop at the Aberdeen Hospital or by contacting one of our company members for one of the few left in stock. The necklaces are $15 each.
Thursday night’s Entrepreneur Open House, held at Trinity Energy Group, was an opportunity for members of Indie-Pendant to network with people from different business backgrounds and hear their stories. The youth heard about risks, challenges and rewards of owning and managing businesses and about some of the supports here in Pictou County for business owners.
All the guests regardless of background were eager to say that Pictou County offers all of them the opportunity to work towards their dreams because of the many opportunities the community offers while still allowing to live a lifestyle that promotes overall well-being and that the entrepreneur spirit and support is strong here.
