Market Moments gives groceries free to lucky shoppers

- BY ADAM MACINNIS

Carla Campbell was shopping with two kids in the New Glasgow Superstore when an employee approached her and told her to hurry up and finish shopping.

They suggested she might want to head to the checkout right away.

A bit bewildered at the request, Campbell started hearing music get louder and louder and heeding the advice went to the checkout.

It’s then that she heard store manager Tony Weatherbie announce that the local store had been randomly selected as the location for free groceries to be given away to those shopping at a certain time.

Confetti cannons were fired off and those at the checkout were rung in for free up to $250 worth of groceries.

“This is a great Wednesday!” she said.

The grocery giveaway was part of Superstore’s Market Moments campaign and is actually the third time in the last couple of years that the New Glasgow store has held the giveaway.

Weatherbie said the location is always selected at random, so it’s incredible that they’ve had three times to host it.

Susan Hill was another of the lucky customers who happened to be in the store at the time.

“I think it’s awesome. It’s totally unexpected,” she said. “I didn’t know that they even did this. I think it’s very, very good of them. It’ll help a lot of people out.”

Oonagh McGonigal was also thankful for the free groceries.

“It’s a nice idea,” she said.
